QUESTION: Hi, I have a large log home with a couple of garages to stain. House was built about 10 years ago and and most of the house has a porch around it but the garages and gables and dormers need some attention. To my knowledge they applied Perma Chink 3 times and did not hold up very well some flaking and dark logs. Would like to use Sikkens log and siding. Can you put oil base over latex? Most area's just dark . Your input please.
ANSWER: NO, you cannot apply oil stain over latex. It will fail! The Perma Chink stain is what we use over 90% of the time. Any log home stain requires maintenance every 3 or 4 years. These hard hit areas on your home may require the clear coat be applied over the stain every other year. The Sikkens isn't going to hold up any better in those areas. It too, requires a Cetol Maintenance be applied every 3 or 4 years, probably every other year on these sunny walls. I would recommend sanding the bad areas and apply the same stain and then keep up on the maintenance.
