Extensive Log Replacement on a Hand-Peeled North Alabama Log Home
This two-story North Alabama log home outside of Huntsville, Alabama needed extensive log replacement on several walls. The worst damage was in the bottom courses sitting right on the stone foundation, under and between the windows, and at several corner log ends. Some of the rotted areas had been patched before with filler. The patches hid the damage but never stopped it.
During our site visit, we mapped out every log that needed replacing. The blue lines in the before photos show that layout. Our estimate came in close. Once the old logs came out, we found only a few additional logs with hidden rot. We walked the homeowner through each one and got approval before replacing them. Communication is always our top priority.
The original logs were hand-peeled, which gives them a distinct, slightly uneven surface a machine-milled log can’t match. So our crew hand-peeled every replacement log the same way. That included full-length logs, log ends at the corners, and the upper courses in the gables. The new logs match the originals in size, profile, and texture.
