The Situation

This was a true hand-hewn Virginia cabin—built with square/hewn timbers and an irregular surface that modern “new” log material can’t replicate. Over time, the cabin developed a combination of bug damage and general rot, especially in the lower log courses and exposed areas.

With cabins like this, the biggest challenge isn’t just structural repair—it’s preserving the original character. If the replacement logs don’t match, the repair looks obvious and the cabin loses value and authenticity.

What We Found

Sections of logs compromised by insect damage and long-term weathering

Advanced checking, surface decay, and softness typical of very old hand-hewn structures

A historic aesthetic that required material and craftsmanship to match—not a standard log swap

Our Solution: Reclaimed Hand-Hewn Log Replacement (Matched to the Original)

To keep the cabin looking original, we used reclaimed hand-hewn logs salvaged from other historic cabins. This allowed us to replicate the same grain pattern, tool marks, texture, and “aged” look you simply can’t get from new milled wood.

Our process included:

Removing compromised log sections while preserving sound original material

Selecting reclaimed hand-hewn logs that matched the cabin’s size, profile, and character

Replacing full log timbers all the way to the inside.

Cutting and fitting replacements so the repair blends seamlessly into the existing wall

Treating and prepping the repaired areas so the cabin is ready for ongoing preservation and protection

The Result

Rotten and bug-damaged logs were replaced without changing the cabin’s historic appearance

Replacement work is intentionally hard to spot—because it matches the original hand-hewn look – these brighter logs will gray after about 6 months and blend in well.

The structure is stabilized while maintaining the authenticity that makes hand-hewn cabins special
