Historic Log Corner Repair with Half-Log Replacement and Log End Replacement (North Carolina)

Service: Log home repair • Half-log replacement • Historic log cabin restoration

Home Type: ~120+ year-old log cabin

Primary Issues: Long-term rot + failed “concrete patch” repairs trapping moisture

The Situation

This historic log cabin had already been “repaired” by someone inexperienced. Rotten sections were dug out and packed with concrete. That’s a common quick-fix on old cabins—and it usually makes the problem worse.

Concrete and wood don’t play well together on exterior log walls:

  • Concrete can trap moisture against bare wood
  • Temperature swings can create condensation at the concrete/wood interface
  • The log stays wet longer, accelerating rot and insect damage
  • It also looks like a patch—because it is

What We Found

  • Decay was concentrated on the exterior faces of several logs at the corner
  • Previous repairs used concrete infill directly against wood, with no proper moisture break
  • The good news: the rot did not extend all the way through the logs—damage was mainly in the outer portion

The Correct Fix: Half-Log Replacement (Not a Surface Patch)

Because the decay was limited to the outside half of the logs, the best long-term solution here was half-log replacement: removing the compromised exterior wood and replacing it with properly fitted new log material that restores both structure and appearance.

Our process included:

  • Removing the failed concrete patch and all deteriorated exterior wood
  • Confirming sound material remained in the inner portion of the logs
  • Installing new hardwood half-logs to match the original species, size, and character
  • Shaping and fitting the replacements so the repair blends naturally with the existing cabin
  • Re-scribe new log ends (sometimes called “crowns”) to fit and match the characteristics of the original home.

The Result

  • The corner is restored with a repair that’s structurally sound and visually consistent with a 120+ year-old cabin
  • No more concrete trapping moisture against the log wall
  • A clean, durable repair that looks like part of the original home—not a “band-aid”

Homeowner Takeaway: Concrete in Logs Is a Red Flag

If you see concrete or mortar packed into log faces, it’s worth having it evaluated. Those materials often hold moisture against wood and speed up deterioration. When rot is limited to the outer portion, half-log replacement is often the ideal middle ground—substantially better than a superficial patch, and unnecessary to go full-log if the interior wood is still solid.
