Targeted Log Replacement on a Log Home Near Louisville, Kentucky
This log home in Northern Kentucky outside Louisville had rot concentrated in the lower half of one long wall. The damage was mostly in the bottom course sitting on the foundation, in several long runs across the middle of the wall, and in the logs beside and under the window. Years of weather had worn away the finish, and open cracks on top of the logs held water after every rain.
During our site visit, we marked each damaged log section. The lines in the before photo show that plan. The crew then removed the rotted sections and installed new logs matched to the diameter and profile of the originals. That included a full-length replacement of the bottom log, which takes the most water and dries the slowest.
The rest of the original wall stayed in place. Only the damaged wood came out, which kept the job focused and the cost down. The homeowner is staining the new logs to match the rest of the house.
